Attila120 with subtitles – A poetic encounter on Hungarian Poetry Day
"There is a healing power in the way this performance is constructed and carried by the actor. The bitterness of that historical period truly comes through—and sadly, it still feels very relevant. But this performance offers a sense of release." The third stop of our Attila120 European tour took place at Palazzo Coppini in Florence, where we celebrated József Attila’s 120th birthday and Hungarian Poetry Day with our performance I Am Not, Only Others See Me, based on his texts. This performance was special, as it was the first time we presented the piece with foreign-language subtitles—for the Italian-speaking audience, the text was projected in Italian. We were very pleased to hear the feedback: even with subtitles, the performance was emotionally engaging and deeply meaningful. During the post-performance discussion, the texts opened the door to speak about ourselves and to reflect on the continuing relevance of József Attila’s poetry. Themes such as poverty, marginalization, exclusion, societal pressure, and the difficulties of our present time were discussed. We are grateful for the collective reflection, curiosity, and engagement—and that this evening truly became a celebration. Special thanks to Associazione Culturale Italo-Ungherese della Toscana for initiating and organizing the event, and to our partners Cesvot, Palazzo Coppini, Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco, Informatore, and Forlilpsi.

"Fresh, living poetry – An evening of reflection and recognition"
"I really enjoyed this performance because it wasn’t just reciting poems—it jumped straight into the essence, it drew me in, moved me, and gave me the chance to rediscover and reinterpret these József Attila poems. Some of them, I truly understood for the first time today." In recent days, we presented our performance I Am Not, Only Others See Me, based on the texts of József Attila, at the Ötpacsirta Salon of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library. It was uplifting to meet such attentive, curious, and thoughtful audience members. We experienced a true Meeting through Theater. The post-performance discussion brought forth profound and meaningful reflections. The freshness of Attila’s texts allowed for open conversations about our own emotions and perspectives. Topics included homelessness, searching for identity, trauma, loneliness, isolation, exclusion, the lack of love, and how these experiences remain deeply relevant today. We are grateful for the personal thoughts shared and for the support of the Józsefváros Municipality, which made this event possible.

Osonó Theatre on tour in Romania with its production of Attila József

January 24, 2025

Between 27 and 30 January, the production I don't exist, only the others see me, based on the texts of Attila József, will be performed ten times. The audience will be able to see the production as an unconventional literature class and classroom performance, as well as a studio theatre performance, in Deva, Odorheiu Secuiesc, Șimonești, Lăzarea and Gheorgheni. The tour is supported by the Hungarian Government. The 55-minute monodrama, based on the texts of Attila József, searches for the topicality and evocability of the poet's oeuvre, while the subsequent conversation gives the performance the opportunity to become a real dialogue. Performed by Oszkár Mucha and directed by Misi Fazakas, the texts recited in the performance are not only lyrical works, but also thoughts reborn in the present tense as a pretext. The poems will be accompanied by fragments from the poet's autobiography and from A Collection of Free Associations. The texts performed in the production include not only lyrical works but also excerpts from the poet's autobiography and his Free Notes. These writings are presented as thoughts reborn in the present, serving as a pretext for personal reflection. How can someone so distant feel so close to us? József Attila’s life challenges are extremes beyond our comprehension, yet his anger resonates with ours, his throat tightens with our tears, and his mustache smiles above our lips. Osonó invites you to a personal meeting: with each other and with József Attila. This meeting allows the poet to sit among us, look at us, share a morsel of wisdom for the road, and let his well-known words unfold in ways we’ve never encountered. An entire life emerges from lines of poetry: mine, yours, or perhaps that of a poor friend named Attila. Audience feedback from previous performances: "This performance truly opened up József Attila's personality for me." "I didn’t particularly like József Attila’s poems before, but this performance brought them closer to me." "As a teacher, I used to teach these texts as poetry, but here they felt conversational, as if the thoughts were born on the spot, making them much more personal and relatable for the students." Tour schedule: January 27, 10:00: Deva, Téglás Gábor School Center January 27, 12:00: Deva, Téglás Gábor School Center January 28, 10:00: Odorheiu Secuiesc, Benedek Elek Pedagogical High School January 28, 12:00: Odorheiu Secuiesc, Benedek Elek Pedagogical High School January 28, 19:00: Șimonești, Cultural Center January 29, 10:00: Odorheiu Secuiesc, Bányai János Technical High School January 29, 12:00: Odorheiu Secuiesc, Bányai János Technical High School January 29, 18:00: Lăzarea, Cultural Hall - Cika Room January 30, 09:00: Gheorgheni, Salamon Ernő High School January 30, 11:00: Gheorgheni, Salamon Ernő High School

Osonó Annual Review – 2024 in Numbers

December 19, 2024

The self-sustaining Osonó Theater Workshop organized 180 cultural, educational, and social events in 2024 across 4 countries, engaging nearly 6,000 participants with an annual budget of €124,500. Of this amount, 93% was sourced from international and Hungarian grants, while income from performances and workshops accounted for 7% of the annual budget. In the past year, Osonó held 62 performances, 61 interactive audience discussions, 51 workshops, and 6 Erasmus+ projects aimed at training youth and adults. Half of these activities took place in Hungary, while the other half were held in Romania and other international locations. The production I Am Not, Only Others See Me, based on the writings of József Attila and premiered in 2022, has surpassed its 150th performance. Directed by Misi Fazakas and performed by Oszkár Mucha, this intimate theatrical experiment toured Europe this year and was frequently presented as a classroom performance, an unconventional literature lesson, or in studio theater settings. The production has been showcased in 45 cities across eight countries, and based on the positive feedback, the company plans to bring it to more schools and communities in 2025. The documentary production As Water Reflects the Face, directed by Misi Fazakas and premiered 13 years ago, is approaching its 650th performance. This year, audiences in Hungary and Transylvania enjoyed the production, which portrays the real stories of young people. Due to high demand, the company will continue to perform it, with new dates planned for spring. The past year also included several Erasmus+ projects in partnership with the Sepsi Adrenalin Sport Association and the Hungarian Cultural Association of Vojvodina. The Health for a Better Future – Personal Development and Health Awareness in Education project series focused on providing non-formal training to support youth workers and educators. Workshops emphasized self-awareness, healthy lifestyles, and mental-physical balance. In autumn, Osonó expanded its collaborations, working with the Harghita County Heritage Preservation Resource Center in Székelyudvarhely to deliver numerous performing arts and educational projects in Harghita County. Additionally, its partnership with the KALOT organization in Miercurea Ciuc continued, allowing I Am Not, Only Others See Me to reach several schools in the area. In 2025, Osonó will begin the year with a performance series in Budapest and a tour in Transylvania. With already secured grant funding, the company anticipates more international and Budapest-based projects. Osonó will continue to build its activities around three key pillars: theater, education, and social projects.
